good submitted by Ele Z. on July 29, 2011, 1:32pm so nice

Great Series, Rather Sad Installment submitted by Sara W on August 14, 2011, 10:01am I'm a big fan on the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency series and have enjoyed all the books in the series. Like any series, some books stand out from others. The Double Comfort Safari Club was an installment that felt slightly off for me. I expected Mma Makutsi and Phuti Rhadiphuti to struggle in getting to the alter, but I didn't expect anything as grave as his accident. Mma Makutsi's spirit seemed positively crushed and I hated to see her giving up on her dreams of a life with the man she loves so easily. It didn't quite seem like her, either, not the Grace Makutsi who stands up to Violet Septotho and plowed through secretarial school with a 97%. It was sobering and sad, which are words I don't usually associate with this series.

The mystery in this book was also only so-so for me. It was a nice change to have the detectives searching for someone for a reward rather than a crime, but it still felt a little flat and like more of an excuse to have them get into the bush than anything else.

While this book in the series wasn't my favorite, it ends on a good note and most of the characters still sparkle - Mma Ramotswe more than any of them.

Lisette Lecat is an extremely talented narrator - she speaks with a lovely rhythm that perfectly matches the tone of the books and gives Mma Ramotswe's peculiar wonderings and pronouncements of human nature the right tinge of girlish curiosity or assured gravitas as needed. She is an absolute delight and a major reason why I often choose to listen to the new #1 Ladies' Detective Agency books rather than read them in print.
