The continuing adventures of Red Dwarf
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on July 27, 2013, 11:29pm
While this BBC science fiction sitcom can be funny, it is also very juvenile. Take it as mindless entertainment and not as anything lasting or important. It is refreshing, however, to see a science fiction series in which the character of African descent is not the first to die, nor is he the villain. In fact, the show's main hero and one other character are played by men of color. The show is rather sexist and includes lots of junior high-style humor by the mostly male cast.
The series begins with two low-ranking maintenance workers on a spaceship. One, Lister, manages to break some rule and is put in cryogenic freeze as punishment for what is meant to be a short time, only to find out that some horrible accident happened to the ship and no one revived him until thousands of years later. Lister's only companions are the ship's computer, a holographic re-creation of his bunkmate Rimmer, and a descendent of Lister's cat. The cat became the mother of a race of talking, humanoid cats.
