Tara is forced to move in with her cousins after her house burns down. She faces a difficult adjustment while her mother is away trying to earn money. Interwoven with this story is that of Tara's ancestors, who in 1859 were convinced by a mysterious stranger to put all their money into searching their property for gold.

Graphic Novel Historical Fiction/Magical Realism
submitted by sdunav on July 25, 2016, 4:04pm
There are a lot of things I really liked in this teen graphic novel: the illustrations, the sense of place (rural/small town Nova Scotia, in 2009 and 1859), the intertwined stories of two teenaged girls, Josey and Tara, the superstitions and magical realism that crept into the story.
But the ending confused me - I was unclear about what happened to two of the main characters. I don't need everything wrapped up with a bow, but there were just too many unanswered questions to leave me fully satisfied. Nevertheless, I want to read Larson's other books!
