COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Longitude and Short of It submitted by Meginator on August 6, 2018, 5:45pm Longitude, and precise location information, is easy to take for granted, and this documentary does a good job of conveying the difficulty of creating and refining an accurate method to determine longitudinal position. The film gains a sense of immediacy from segments filmed on a historical tall ship in open waters (to illustrate firsthand the perilous rocking ships faced at sea) and historical reenactments featuring an actor reading entries from clockmaker John Harrison's journal in character. The film focuses fairly heavily on Harrison, only briefly touching on other approaches to the question of longitude, but does include interviews for historical and scientific context. The documentary is compelling and feels different than similar productions, even though it does lie on the drier end of the spectrum overall.
