Persepolis is the story of Marjane Satrapi's childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland.

Cool submitted by Annarborkaren on June 14, 2015, 6:41pm This is the greatest book I have ever read in my life! It has a list of emotions that it could strike at you at any moment!

Cute submitted by Isabella Giviyan on August 14, 2016, 7:19pm Nicely drawn, kind kind of nostalgic.

Great for individuals... or book clubs submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 27, 2016, 4:17pm The first volume of this (what here is identified as #1-2) was my May book club selection. Yes, we actually chose a graphic novel for our book club... and LOVED it! Though most had never read anything in this format, they found it easy to engage with, it generated a wonderful amount of discussion and the group really loved the change in style. Many had read #1-4 as they either were curious or happened to get _The Complete Persepolis_, which added to the discussion.

I read _The Complete Persepolis_, myself. It's a young woman's graphic novel autobiography of growing up in Iran, with a stint in Europe, during the Iranian Revolution. I liked the first half of the book better. One of the things I thought the author did particularly well was present her childhood understanding of the world from a child's perspective, that is, she didn't frame it from her adult knowledge, but let her childhood viewpoint take precedence. We saw her learn and grow, and were invited to grow with her.

The starkness of the drawings added to the story. There was nothing extra or distracting in them, and it left us focused on what mattered. This was a definite strength as the political and contextual story was intense. This was also a text-heavy graphic novel, as these things go, so keeping the visuals clean was a smart artistic choice.

I was less enamored of the second half of the book (what would be #3-4). Satrapi's story as she was in Europe held less interest for me, and while I understand that it created more of the push-and-pull between perspectives and cultures, it felt quite directionless in terms of the storyline. In a work of fiction, I would say that the editor hadn't done a good job... but real life doesn't get that, does it? Sometimes the point IS that we're stuck. Still, it was a much less interesting read until the author got back to Iran again.

Overall, a really wonderful book and created some fantastic discussion for our book club. Highly recommended both for individuals and for groups.

Loved! submitted by mgabbieb on June 9, 2023, 11:23am Was so excited to read Part 2. Just as enjoyable as the first.

Great & educational submitted by Xris on July 31, 2023, 7:43pm Great graphic novel for learning about Iranian history, and about Marjane's history. Educational about the wars and how the Iranians really felt.
