COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Peter Pan submitted by SBNB on July 12, 2015, 2:51pm This is a classic Disney movie. I used to love it.

Peter Pan notes for parents submitted by schriste on July 28, 2015, 8:00pm If you haven't seen this film in a while, you might remember the basics: Peter Pan brings the Darling children--Wendy, John and Michael--to Never-Never Land, where no one grows up. Peter wants Wendy to tell stories and to be the mother the Lost Boys lack. However magical the flight there, the Darling children soon discover Never-Never Land may be a place of eternal childhood but it includes some serious problems, most notably Captain Hook's obsession for capturing Peter. If you're planning to watch this with your children, you need to be prepared to discuss the racist portrayal of the "Indians" who are "savages" and caricatured as such. Parents of young girls may also note that none of the female inhabitants of Neverland welcome Wendy--Tinkerbell tries to kill her as do the mermaids of Mermaid Lagoon out of jealousy that someone else has caught the interest of Peter Pan. (And Tinkerbell herself has a scene early in the movie where she looks in a mirror and frowns about the size of her posterior. She's a pixie with the body of a Barbie doll and still...!) Smee speaks frequently of getting back to regular pirating and of slitting throats. Beyond these aspects which likely caused no qualms in 1953, for sensitive kids there are the usual cartoon-y "bad guys" and some scary situations, made mostly lighter by Peter Pan himself, who sees it all as play. As with any Disney film, you can expect some scenes of great animated beauty, particularly the flight to and from Never-Never Land. In short, my children enjoyed the adventure story of the film and several of the scenes which concerned me didn't register with them. While they'd like to see it again I'm in no particular hurry for a second showing.
