very good submitted by bgpeterson on April 6, 2013, 2:23pm This is a very well done movie. The acting is top nock and the story flows well. Not as good as LOTR as it is just more of the same from Peter Jackson. That is my only disappointment

say yes to hobbits submitted by manz on April 9, 2013, 4:27pm I loved this movie! This isn't saying much, but the filmmakers probably could have done anything and I would have liked it.

I don't like how they've turned The Hobbit into a trilogy, but I really enjoyed the first part and look forward to the next two. I love being back in the shire with the hobbits, meeting new characters, and going on new adventures.

I can't wait to watch the 2-disc special edition!

WOW submitted by DoodleBob on June 20, 2013, 3:54pm This movie was so much better than I thought it would be. Would recommend.

Great franchise addition submitted by crazypockets on June 20, 2013, 7:27pm This movie held up well within the franchise. It was just as fun as the "Lord of the Rings" movies, if not moreso. I haven't read any of the books yet, so I can't say how accurate the story was to the book, but from what I've heard from hardcore fans, there were some changes, but the changes were good. It was overall very entertaining. Great scenery, acting, story, humor, action…everything you'd want from this franchise. And of course Gollum was his usual Gollumey self, only better.

It was a bit boring submitted by yojasor on June 21, 2013, 5:39pm I read The Hobbit book before I saw this movie, and, as always, it was much better than the movie. The book was already a little slow, but the dragged it out even slower in the movie. They could of easily put the entire book into one movie. If they had done that I think the movie would of been much more exciting and enjoyable. Overall it was still a good movie, just I wish they didn't spread the story out into three movies.

it's the hobbit submitted by seadocks on August 8, 2013, 10:54pm Come on what is not to like about the hobbit. Little people that like to eat, drink, party, and indulge in all life's pleasures, isn't that what we all want to do. I think the film has a little of everything, fear, violence, compassion, relations between different societies of people, and magic. Cannot wait for the next two films, if there are in fact two more.

Pleased submitted by kathleen824 on August 12, 2013, 9:44pm Being a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and already attached to the hobbitts I was pleased at how easily "The Hobbitt" brought to life Tolkien's characters.Looking forward to the rest of the story.

Not quite 'perfect' but still DARN good! submitted by hathaway1066 on August 17, 2013, 6:50pm Probably it would be impossible to get every last iota of the Hobbit conveyed in a movie--but it could be argued that some iotas maybe ought not be.

--conveyed, that is.

And this movie does as good a job as could be expected from Jackson et al. (Perhaps part of the let down is that we now expect that magical level of rendering, so we're not quite as wowed as with the LOTR films?)

Watch this and enjoy--you won't have wasted your time. :-)

The Hobbit submitted by SBNB on June 24, 2014, 7:40pm It's not bad. I enjoyed it. It has it's flaws, but I think it's worth watching.

the hobbit: an unexpected journey submitted by a2sue on June 29, 2014, 9:29am my husband is a fan of the hobbit: an unexpected journey, but i am definitely NOT

The Hobbit: a not quite unexpected boredom submitted by josephwb on July 1, 2014, 10:15pm Ack. I thought I should read the book before seeing the movie (TODO: write review of The Hobbiit book: the most overrated yet underwhelming book I have ever read). Little good that did: the movie apparently diverges to the Silmarillion (which I have not read, and do not plan to, as it sounds like the most boring book ever written). As a non-Tolkein fan, I spent the movie wondering "who is that guy? he is not in the book!" and "what? that is not the order of events!". I would have fared far better having not reading the book at all. Even so: meh. Special effects: good. Story: weak.

As movies of great books go submitted by mjanen on July 15, 2014, 7:37pm a great start.

3 star submitted by frodobaggins on July 26, 2015, 2:15pm leaves out some important parts, other than that, amazing

Mindless dreck submitted by -alex- on July 28, 2016, 3:24pm I loved the book, but I couldn't get through the first five minutes of the movie... and I wish I could get that five minutes of my life back.

Good as expected submitted by toschag on August 2, 2016, 11:02pm The movie departs quite a bit from the book and even further than the feel of LOTR, but has an endearing style of it's own. Much more light-hearted.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey submitted by avrogers1 on June 20, 2017, 2:58pm I really enjoyed this movie. So much adventure! I also liked how it tied into the LOTR movies

An Okay Adaptation submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2017, 8:37am "The Hobbit" is a fairly good adaptation of parts of the original book, but it suffers from the fact that the relatively short source material is being turned into three full-length movies. The effect isn't as negative here as it is in the later films, but some scenes are too drawn out and feel like needless padding. That said, the filmmakers did a thorough job in imagining Middle Earth, starting with excellent casting, costumes, and set design. The adventure feels epic and the humor effectively lightens the mood at appropriate times, making for a unique feel that fits in well with Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. This film is successful but does display some of the problems that will come to plague the later films in this series.

great submitted by hollieesper121573 on August 8, 2017, 9:18pm I really liked all these movies

Before the train wreck submitted by FordAlpha on August 28, 2017, 11:03am "The Hobbit" is a fun, fairly tidy little book: "There and Back Again." The trilogy of "Hobbit" movies is a grating, untidy, bloated mess. This first installment is not too bad; there's delight to be found in the depiction of The Shire, in the dwarves' takeover of Bilbo's home, and in the depictions of other favorite events from the book. Unfortunately, someone decided to stuff the story full of weird, creepy side-plots from Tolkein's other writings (mostly unpublished during his lifetime), and they really really get in the way. I admire Tolkein's extensive world-building as much as anybody, but to make a good movie, you need to cut out extraneous background material and tighten up the storyline, not shove a lot of new background material in.

Good submitted by anacoluthon on August 21, 2018, 7:33pm Peter Jackson brings us back to Middle Earth with an adaption of The Hobbit! I also agree that three movies was probably a bit much... However, I found the characters delightful and enjoyed the addition of plot lines from the appendices.

Alright submitted by c_zhang on June 29, 2019, 12:52am It's not bad. I enjoyed it. It has its flaws, but I think it's worth watching.

What a gem submitted by yufamily on August 18, 2019, 3:59pm Complete with great plot and actions

Loved it so much I read the book submitted by journeyhawthorne on August 6, 2022, 4:56pm When I was younger I tried to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy and couldn't get past the first book. Since I couldn't read the books, I didn't watch the movies, and never got into LotR. Fast forward to 2013, my family wanted to go see this film. I had given up my personal rule of reading the book before watching the movie, so I agreed. I loved the cinematography, the feeling of adventure, and the plot itself, so I picked up the book afterwards!

Still haven't tried to re-read LotR though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Three ring circus submitted by tarascon on July 11, 2023, 3:47pm First I must say that I read Tolkien around 1970 and have been an admirer of him since; when I pitch his work to people, I always emphasize what a fine novelist this academic was—a rare thing among the professorial class.

The Hobbit trilogy had some decent moments… Smaug was great.
So, having said that (and having thoroughly enjoyed Jackson’s LOTR), these movies were weak—if only for the ludicrous dwarven-elf love imbroglio and the presentation of dwarves as some kind of comic relief. A war pig? Really? Had they all tumbled out of a tiny car and run in circles, it couldn’t have been goofier. And what’s with the Scottish brogue?
3 stars.
FAIL.
Try again.
Fail better.
