Surprisingly problematic

I'm going to include a trigger warning. And no, it is not for the rape and murder that sets off the book. I'm not sure you could go into this without being aware of that. And after that first chapter it gets into a study of the grieving process of the people left behind. All well and good.
No, my warning is about the act of non-consensual sex practiced _from beyond the grave_ at the end of the book. That is ... quite an accomplishment, for both the character and author. It destroyed any good will that this reader had for the characters involved. I guess that this may all be part of the author working through the trauma of her own past, but I did not enjoy being a part of it.
Underwhelming writing submitted by Noight on June 30, 2023, 11:10pm Sebold’s writing REALLY underwhelmed me. Not to mention the whole book. I found myself not expecting much more towards the end. The writing is pretty strange too at times. Also the ending I felt was unnecessary and unfinished. Could have ended off better at ch. 23.
