COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Proto Green Day submitted by Meginator on August 17, 2020, 7:26pm This combined album collects some of Green Day’s earliest recordings, a fact that becomes immediately obvious from the raw, rough production quality that is a far cry from their current, slick, pop-adjacent sound. Crunchy and imperfect as it is, it lends the music a sense of authenticity and serves as a reminder of Green Day’s roots as an irreverent punk outfit. These songs may lack the addictive hooks of Kerplunk and the following albums, but Billie Joe’s unique vocals identify this immediately as Green Day, along with rougher, more experimental versions of the signature rhythmic and harmonic elements that are further developed throughout the band’s now-extensive catalogue. It’s not a bad start, even if the band’s future influence on punk and pop music is only hinted at.

where they started submitted by tisaallen on July 16, 2022, 10:08pm This CD combines the album 39/Smooth with the EPs 1000 Hours and Slappy, presenting the earliest music by Green Day. It's pretty straightforward pop punk that they considerably refined by the time of their second album, Kerplunk. It has a different and less fitting drummer than Tre Cool. The Slappy EP (tracks 11-14) is stronger than the rest.
