Hits Country-Rock's Sweet Spot submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 10:16pm This album hits the sweet spot, with tracks that tap into country's roots while anticipating its increasing commingling with rock. Lyrically, the focus mostly rests on love, heartbreak, and rural life; Paisley brings a sort of down-home charm to the vocals that shifts ever so slightly to suit the subject at hand, which makes each of the tracks feel genuine. My favorite songs are those with the best sense of humor (the joyous “That's Love”) and the bitterest taste of irony (“The Best Thing That I Had Goin’”). Neither does anything unexpected; but, like the rest of the songs on this album, something about them just works. Brad Paisley is a crowd-pleaser, and this album manages to be broadly appealing without sacrificing its soul.
