Special features: new, restored high-definition digital transfers, approved by director Chris Marker; new video interviews with filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin; Chris on Chris, a video piece on Marker by filmmaker and critic Chris Darke; two excerpts from the French TV series "Court-circuit (le magazine)" directed by Luc Lagier.
"La jetée" was the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's film "Twelve Monkeys" and is almost entirely narrated using black and white stills. After Paris is destroyed in a third world war, the survivors are forced to retreat underground where scientists conduct strange time-travel experiments in an effort to escape to a better past or future. In "Sans soleil", an unknown woman reads the writings of a cameraman who travels the world to produce a study of "the dreams of the human race"; he is particularly attracted to the two extremes of Japan and Africa, and discusses the images that he creates with the woman.
DVD, region 1, widescreen (1.66:1) presentation; Dolby Digital mono., NTSC.

Small Garbage, medium garbage. THese are not movies, they are NOTHING.
submitted by Tassos on January 4, 2019, 8:14am
Quickly got through the first small B&W POS from the 60s, (just 27 mins) then went and saw the more recent one from the 80s (*far better picture), but still.
These were touted as such bid deals? They are NOT.
Don’t listen to the other review submitted by alecre2018 on November 5, 2020, 11:07pm This film is gorgeous, a lovely work of art highly recommend it
The original 12 Monkeys submitted by brooksza on July 13, 2023, 12:49pm I liked this much better the second time, maybe expecting the style helped or maybe it was the proximity to the remake. It reminded me of the Netflix show Dark and I liked the many more thematic connections to 12 Monkeys in this watch.

Though I also really like “Twelve Monkeys” this two-part collection features highly influential filmic experiences. And with all due respect to personal preference, the sorts of people who only expect to be passive filmgoers and merely desire to be told “a story” will not—and possibly never will—enjoy this offering.
And re Tassos: I’ve noticed that he/she enjoys a lot of the films which also appeal to me so some of the reviews posted by Tassos perplex me. And skipping scenes which “are boring” won’t help anyone understand a movie.
