Lucky to listen submitted by mjanen on August 12, 2014, 10:09pm Wonderful, quiet, little story that is thoroughly engrossing. Good middle school coping book.

Lucky seeks her higher power submitted by camelsamba on August 31, 2015, 2:24pm It's odd how sometimes the summary of a book (such as the one up above, in "additional details") will focus on a smallish episode near the end of the book. What does that say about everything that led up to it - that it's not important? Or does it just lead readers to spend 80% of their reading/listening time wondering if they have the right book?

The title of the book refers to this: Lucky has a small job cleaning up a building in town where all the local 12 step groups meet (Alcoholics Anonymous, Smokers Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous). She often eavesdrops on the meetings through a hole in the wall, and thus ponders what sort of higher power she has in her life. Her mother died a few years earlier, and a French woman named Bridgitte is her guardian. Various incidents are related along the way, leading up to the climax where Lucky runs away during a major sand storm. Will she return home? Or will this be the final straw that causes Bridgitte to move back to France?

For some reason, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I'd hoped. It is clearly aimed at a middle grades audience, but certain details or aspects seem more mature somehow and were thus jarring.

The narrator does a good job with the story - the characters have distinctive voices and personalities, and she is able to make the various noises that Miles apparently enjoys vocalizing. At the end of the book there is a short interview with the author and it is quite awkward - it's clearly scripted, no big deal there, but the questions and answers are delivered with very little enthusiasm or humor so it sounds bland and boring.
