Sixty-one years ago, the United States and Japanese armies met on Iwo Jima. Decades later, hundreds of letters are unearthed from that stark island's soil. The letters give faces and voices to the men who fought there, as well as the extraordinary general who led them. Leading the defense is Lt. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi. With little defense other than sheer will and the volcanic rock of the island itself, Gen. Kuribayashi's unprecedented tactics transform what was predicted to be a quick and bloody defeat into nearly 40 days of heroic and resourceful combat.
DVD, region 1, widescreen (2.40:1) presentation; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, dual-layer, DVD-9.
Contents: "Gyokusai Sōshikikan" no etegami.

Multiple award winner! submitted by aschling on August 21, 2008, 12:46pm The acting, cinematography, costumes etc were all great! A very good movie. I was obviously not there in WWII, but this movie gives the viewer an insight as to what it must have been like for the Japanese soldiers. If you watch this movie and have not seen Flags of Our Fathers, I would definitely recommend it. The two movies are the same scenes but from opposite sides.

Amazing submitted by 0liviap0pp on August 22, 2011, 7:14am This is a great historical movie on what it would be like for the Japanese soldiers during WWII.

Not as good as other Movies directed by CLint submitted by Tassos on December 31, 2018, 8:21am This and especially its twin from the US point of view were rather disappointing to somebody who is a huge History buff like me and has read hundreds of books on this and related subjects, not to mention documentaries.

I could care less how many "employee of the month" awards it won. It is still petty and disappointing.
