Nobody Lives in a Graveyard submitted by elijah on August 2, 2009, 12:06pm Nobody Owens is a boy being raised by ghosts. He has the run of the graveyard and spends his days talking with the long dead, exploring, reading, and dreaming of the world beyond the graveyard gates. But Nobody cannot leave the graveyard, because the graveyard and its caretaker, the mysterious Silas, are the only things protecting him. The deadly Man Jack killed Nobody's family when he was just a baby, and is now looking to finish the job!

This is a wonderful novel. Fans of Neil Gaiman are familiar with the magic he weaves into the worlds he creates; magic that is both tied to folklore and innovative in the weaving of original mythology. The Graveyard Book is no exception.

The Graveyard Book can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The plot in some ways echoes the form of T.H. White's Once and Future King, in that the story progresses through several plots as young Nobody grows in which he learns valuable lessons and gains friends, but which have little or nothing to do with the central plot of the novel. The plot does build to a grand confrontation and conclusion--you will not be disappointed!

The book on CD is narrated by the author Neil Gaiman, who is a grand storyteller. His voice lends the perfect air of quiet deliberation to the narration.

Dark and great submitted by marielle on July 16, 2012, 6:54pm I love this book; it's very dark but still definitely a kid's book. I bought a copy of this for my cousin.

Sputters out after an excellent first chapter but still recommended submitted by klickitat on August 6, 2012, 8:12am The Graveyard Book is notable for being heavily decorated. Along with winning the 2009 Newbery Medal, it also won the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 2010 Carnegie Medal (a British equivalent of the Newbery), and a Locus Award for Best YA Novel. That Graveyard Book won awards for three different age ranges (children’s, young adult, adult), hints at its broad appeal. Although, just to give all of the above a sprinkling of salt, I would point out that Gaiman has an especially rabid fanbase and just maybe they were waiting in the wings to reward him?

This is an excellent audiobook; one of the best I’ve listened to in a long time. Gaiman’s text begs to be read out loud and the fact that Neil himself (pun intended) is such a fabulous narrator is a huge bonus. I realize the guy wrote the book and therefore knew what dialects the characters would use but he does all the voices! He even does convincing women without resorting to falsetto. Phrases like “scraggly grass” come to life in their rightful British accent. It’s awesome. I recommend you give it a listen.

The story itself, I’m afraid, sputters out after an excellent first chapter. Oh, it’s still interesting but it doesn’t have the same pow! it starts with. It revives for the final act though. Oh, does it ever. I apologize to my neighbors for my shouting quite a bit while listening to the last chapter.

The Graveyard Book submitted by lstorc on August 6, 2018, 4:24am The best bedtime story for adults

The Graveyard Book submitted by SBNB on June 14, 2020, 9:02pm I picked up this book initially because I had been wanting to try out Neil Gaiman and I saw it had great reviews. This book definitely didn’t disappoint! The Graveyard Book as a whole was not really suspenseful since most conflicts were resolved at the end of each chapter (like a collection of short stories), but the world and characters created kept drawing me back. Overall, it was an excellent!

Neil Gaiman's voice acting is not bad submitted by BurntSaori on July 8, 2020, 12:41pm Was easy to get into this book, I think the best Gaiman I've read.

One of my favorite audiobooks! submitted by lmangus on July 24, 2022, 9:35pm The book is wonderful, but I'd heard the audio was even better, and picked it up for a roadtrip. Was pleasantly surprised. At times, it's so immersive, I still have "scenes" in my head with the characters. Highly recommend.
