Henry Barthes is an educator with a talent to connect with his students. Yet as a substitute teacher he hides his gift to avoid emotional connections. When an assignment places him at a school with a burned-out administration and an apathetic student body, he becomes a role model as a teacher. His emotional bond with the students and teachers help him see he is not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.
DVD ; widescreen (16:9) presentation ; Dolby digital 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo.
COMMUNITY REVIEWS
intense and good submitted by manz on November 12, 2014, 2:25pm This film is more than I expected. It's a bit depressing. But as a former teacher I really liked the insight. It was intense to wacth the teachers and studens suffering. There are definitely some truths to the sadness. Adrien Brody is fabulous in it. This film was a big hit at film festivals.
Not just about teaching submitted by edb.blanchard on June 26, 2019, 12:36pm Clearly an independent film, and the title is definitely the major theme of most characters. Also a theme of parenting.
THe film wants to be taken seriously but becomes too much of a godam soap opera. submitted by Tassos on April 24, 2021, 5:39pm THe musical score ruins the picture towards the end, it's too loud and intrusive. We are not allowed to think for ourselves. IT's the easy way to make a soap opera of a movie with serious aspirations. The lengthy reading from some book by Broady at the end, alone in his classroom, is too boring to catch the attention of most viewers, and is a lame way to end the movie, especially when accompanied with the godam bad piano 'music'.
