COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Play That One Chord submitted by Caser on February 20, 2011, 4:17pm Dance and electronic music is undoubtedly the music of the moment, and the sleek, polished, bass thumping production can definitely shake a room full of bodies to move their hips. Culturally, that has to be worth big points. But if you need a break from all the beats and synth; if you're hoping that someone will remember where they put their distortion pedal, can I humbly suggest you dig into the history crates and get yourself some Doolittle?

If there's one thing that 90s rock music does well, it's the loud, fuzzy guitar riff. Thanks again to Cobain for that one. "Debaser" kicks off Doolittle with one of the best of these riffs, the kind that you could imagine Pavement listening to and writing an entire album trying to out-fuzz the Pixies with. And then they top it with "Wave of Mutilation," a bar-raising feat that perhaps only Rage Against the Machine contested with "Bulls on Parade" as track two on Evil Empire.

But the Pixies and Doolittle aren't just for guitar lovers. They're too much fun to shout along with and pump your fist to and try to figure out what they're saying and whether singer Black Francis really "walked the sand with the crustaceans". Fuzz out, Pixies.

Albini was quoted as submitted by jibkidder on June 24, 2022, 10:54pm saying something like Frank Black is not a genius but I came around to realizing that Kim Deal is. I have a theory that if the smartest player in a group is the bassist, that bodes well. Sometimes I compare, in my mind, Frank Black to the wacky rapping guy from the Sugarcubes. Julee Cruise apparently listened to the B52's "Roam" while dying. Nice when the wacky guy quiets up. I guess for Sonic Youth I always liked the Kim songs...
