An Indie Version of Themselves submitted by Meginator on July 14, 2019, 5:21pm This album has a more broadly appealing sound than the hardy blues-rock that characterizes Cage the Elephant’s earlier records, but the musical shift still suits their style. Their rough-edged roots occasionally come through in the guitars, though the vocals lack a sense of hard-living conviction (except, perhaps, on "Come a Little Closer", which comes closest to their previous vibe). The overall sound lies close to an alt-rock inspired indie vibe, with a slightly dark edge to it, and it’s satisfying even if it isn’t as inventive or effective as their earlier work.
