Inferno -- Purgatory -- Paradise.
In this Seymour Chwast's version of Dante Alighieri's epic poem, Dante and his guide Virgil don fedoras and wander through noirish realms of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. Along the way they catalog a multitude of sinners and saints--many of them real people to whom Dante tellingly assigned either horrible punishment or indescribable pleasure--and meet both God and Lucifer face-to-face. Chwast creates a visual fantasia that fascinates on every page. His inventive illustrations capture the delirious complexity of this classic of the western canon.
Contents: Divina commedia.

alas, not enlightening enough submitted by camelsamba on July 30, 2016, 11:13am True confessions: in many ways I am culturally illiterate, and one of those ways is that I have never read any portion of Dante's Divine Comedy. When I saw this adaptation was available in graphic novel format, I thought it might serve to fill in some gaps. Unfortunately, I did not achieve my goal. I may be a little bit more enlightened (for example, Hell is super-complicated in Dante's eyes: pits in rings in circles in... who knows what!), but in general I am still confused. I also didn't really like the illustration style, but I suppose it is somewhat appropriate for the subject matter. (Note that the guy from "Caps for Sale" makes a cameo appearance in the 1st Ledge of Ante-Purgatory, Canto IV, page 67!)
