High Sea Adventure submitted by skcramer on July 15, 2013, 9:20pm When the leader of her gang of orphans is murdered, Mary escapes London by disguising herself as a boy, christening herself Jacky and becoming a ship’s boy on the HMS Dolphin, but she soon finds more adventure than she could have imagined as she battles pirates and unsavory crewmates while sorting out her feelings for fellow ship’s boy Jaimy. There are touches of Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson in this young adult novel, but Mary’s distinctive cockney voice lends a certain originality to the high seas tale. The audiobooks performance by Katherine Kellgren is particularly phenomenal, and the characters really come to life through a powerful blend of unwavering voice and dramatic performance. The story itself has its uneven moments – too much time is spent on Mary’s life in London, and the romance plot develops rather suddenly – yet the strong performance carries listeners through these inconsistences with little concern. Finally, the sometimes violent and sexual content in this book may mark it for more mature readers. Recommended for readers age 15 and up.
