A character-driven adventure submitted by msasena on July 3, 2011, 10:12pm I listened to this book on the recommendation of a friend. While it's premise seemed a little silly (historical fiction where dragons are the arial brigade during the Napoleonic Wars), I was surprised at how natural the story seemed to take shape. The author has done a good job of presenting the world in which these characters come together, and does a wonderful job of pulling you into the developing relationship between Captain Laurence and Temeraire. While it may not have been high action throughout, it was a story that draws you in completely. I highly recommend this for fantasy novel fans that are looking for something written for grown-ups. I don't mean that it contains sex or gratuitous violence or bad language (because it contains none of the above), but that it is not childish in its presentation. It is a character-driven adventure story, and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Not your usual Napoleonic era yarn, but fun! submitted by hathaway1066 on August 21, 2013, 2:30pm I enjoyed this. The dragons in the 'Napoleonic era British vs France' part of it was a bit odd, at first, but hey, why not? and that part of the story is done well enough--the larger role of dragons in history and warfare and so on, and their ecology an how they are used in Britain's military are all developed enough and intelligently enough that merging previous knowledge of that era with dragons turns out not to be at all difficult.

Also, the character development and overall plot of the novel is quite engaging.

Detailed, but compelling submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on July 15, 2017, 8:30pm I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am solidly hooked on the 9 book series. It reimagines the Napoleonic Wars... with dragons. This kind of historic war-setting and battle-retelling isn't generally my "thing," but Novik does such a great job bringing the world and the characters to life that I am quite caught up in it. There's a lot of detail and historical context, which might weigh some down, but I thought it was well done and handled in a way that allowed the story to keep moving.

I listened to this story as an audio book, as the Ann Arbor library did not have the first book of the series in paper form at the time. I enjoyed the narration and thought it was well done.

My new favorite series! submitted by BurntSaori on June 14, 2019, 4:35pm If someone told me that I'd love a book set during the Napoleonic wars but with Dragons I'd probably pass. A friend just told me to try it and it's so well written and lovely. It's mostly about the relationship between a man and his rare and mysterious dragon. Simon Vance is splendid.

Not Typical Dragon-based fantasy submitted by parlettes on July 18, 2020, 1:54pm If you are looking for a sword-and-stone dragon series, this is not it. It may even be better though! Taking place during the Napoleonic Wars, this is a new take on dragon tales and I love it. It's charming, adult, witty and very well written. Simon Vance brings the character, even the dragon, to life.
