John Luther, the near-genius detective struggling with his own demons, returns with two distinctive, thrilling crime stories. Devastated by the brutal murder of his wife, John Luther returns to policing in a different world. His old unit has gone and he's working in the newly created Serious and Serial unit, headed by former police complaints officer Martin Schenk. Luther quickly gathers together his team, rescuing his old partner Detective Justin Ripley from uniform.

Luther submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 14, 2014, 7:56pm Idris Elba returns as our title character in season 2. Following the murder of his wife by a serial killer Luther later caught, the detective is now assigned to a new unit with a new boss, but brings back Ripley as his assistant. Oddly, Luther has become friends with his late wife's lover.
He also goes to see Alice, the sociopath whom he figured out had killed her parents in the first episode of the first series, in the psychiatric hospital. Although he could never gather the evidence to bring her to trial and although Alice threatened Luther and his wife, he has become close to her and even helps her.
This season is especially gruesomely violent and far more graphic than most shows. I finally had to stop watching as it got to be too disturbing. The series follows very real problems, including human trafficking and the exploitation of women, as well as torture and the modern sense of isolation.
