Sunshine and Madness submitted by irenzero on May 6, 2008, 11:47am Hard Candy is the story of a young woman who is seemingly being seduced by an internet predator, only to turn the tables on him. It’s premises might suggest a film akin to the Rape-Revenge genre of the late 1970’s, only the acting, writing and directing elevate it about those conventions. Ellen Page is a marvel to watch as she moves seamlessly from the role of a meek victim to a enraged vigilante. I am not sure exactly about the end of this film, and there is the looky-lou in me that wants to see the horrible stuff that is hinted at in the film but never shown. I have to also point out the amazing set design, with it’s soulless and sterile hostility, the only other film that I can think of that has so effectively used the modern environment to portray isolation and creepiness was One Hour Photo. Over all a great little film that I hope more people will take the opportunity to check out.

Sick submitted by rwright on August 3, 2012, 1:49pm A revenge fantasy, plain and simple, dressed up as a kind of odd "morality thriller." Both characters come out of the film detestable, although the text seemed to want me to sympathize and identify with the girl torturer. One of the worst films I've seen in years, despite some nice cinematography.

What a worthless, unwatchable, sorry excuse for a movie!!!!! AVOID. submitted by Tassos on October 10, 2019, 12:38pm I had to fast forward every scene. 100% worthless movie.

Go see a GOOD Movie instead. or a GREAT One, as the films of the immortals Ingmar Bergman, or Akira KUrosawa I am watching on DVD now.

Thinks It's Original But Isn't submitted by shira.pilarski on July 18, 2020, 3:54pm Apparently, producer David W. Higgins saw a story once about Japanese girls' entrapment, using flirtation, of businessmen in order to mug them. Then he got a (male) screenwriter and (male) director to turn that story into a child rape revenge story. So it was clearly made by men, for men -- Jeff is portrayed almost sympathetically for most of the movie, even though he is a damn child rapist. Gross. Hayley is really smarmy, which works but is still unpleasant. The movie succeeds in being disturbing, if only in making the viewer feel as though everyone in the world is a piece of garbage.
