SURPRISE submitted by clayton on July 12, 2013, 6:22pm What a pleasant surprise when I got this disc from the Library, having seen his show at the Second Chance in Ann Arbor years ago, I knew what to expect but to find the first album included was brilliant, its a great transition from his Dolls work to the solo work, with the classic Funky but Chic, Girls, Lonely Tenement and Frenchette . All his songs have a great impact, the only weakness for me has always been his inability to end a song, in concert this is great but in a studio it diminishes the strength of the track for me, being from the "leave them wanting more" school. Now onto the "Live it Up" portion of the disc, there are some great live recordings here, the Animals medley, Frenchette, Funky But Chic, Stranded in the Jungle and a nice finale of Personality Crisis . There are other good songs here, but the one's I've mentioned are the gems for me. Hearing the live stuff again reminded me of how great a venue like The Second Chance was and how it is needed now more than ever, with performances from the Ramones,Wall of Voodoo, Divine, The Dead Boys, Sonic Rendezvous and so many more, damn this used to be a fun town.
