What do You Think? submitted by DTrier on January 21, 2012, 12:39pm To broach the topic of racism and consider it one of alternating stories is worth exploring, but I would not go so far as to call the film of "the Help" progressive.

Very good movie submitted by pkooger on February 6, 2012, 3:32pm I heard differing opinions about this film before seeing it, so I was a little hesitant about checking it out. I'm very glad I did. I thought it was excellent. The film is not nearly as much of a comedy as the advertising campaign made it out to be. You'll notice that the library has it in the Drama section, not the Comedy section. That is not to say that it doesn't have some very funny moments. It does. Octavia Spencer has a well-deserved reputation as a great comedian. That said, I thought the film was engaging while staying respectful of the harsh realities of the society it portrays. And what an ugly society it is. Perhaps one needs to have lived in Mississippi in order to judge its culture, but that's an experience I'm glad not to have had. The Help is a riveting movie.

Very Good submitted by alumeng.ajl on June 26, 2012, 8:02pm I really enjoyed this film. It deserved all the Oscar nominations it received.

The Help submitted by SBNB on August 22, 2016, 4:30pm I didn't have high expectations when I checked out this DVD. I only picked it because it had been nominated for an Oscar, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a very good movie that kept me entertained and interested from start to finish.

The Help submitted by a2sue on July 23, 2017, 11:39pm The Help is good stuff!

Loved it! submitted by smgop on August 25, 2017, 8:54am I loved the book, and loved the movie! Great character development.

Entertaining submitted by wendylv on August 30, 2017, 7:29am This is a good adaptation of the book with wonderful performances from the cast. It does get a bit schmaltzy at the end.

The help submitted by elepling on August 6, 2018, 10:51am Highly recommended, lighthearted film about a heavy topic

I guess this is a veritable archetype of the "magical Negro" figure. submitted by lisa on August 14, 2018, 2:13pm Which is unfortunate.

Worth-while watching submitted by mcreader on August 15, 2018, 6:08pm This movie follows the lives of women who show the viewer what race relations were like in the 1960's. The movie itself is very multi-faceted; covering drama, friendships, comedy, etc... The cast did an excellent job, especially Viola Davis. She definitely deserves the accolades she received. It is an entertaining film.

Intelligent and moving submitted by lstorc on August 28, 2018, 2:07am This is a fantastic historical fiction that is reflective of humanity's ability to be cruel and accountable, while still remaining heartfelt and comical in spades.

Moving submitted by c_zhang on June 28, 2019, 4:03pm A heavy topic, but this movie carries it out well. The acting was great.

Moving submitted by Clown81 on July 27, 2019, 7:37pm It's a moving film, but regressive.

different from the book submitted by crp on August 16, 2019, 11:41pm like so many movies, this one misses some of the best stuff from the book

GREAT submitted by gracekil on August 21, 2019, 3:55pm Everyone should watch this!
It's a great story, and Emma Stone is wonderful in it.

Infuriating... submitted by Xris on May 19, 2020, 11:27pm ...how people were treating blacks back then, I couldn't wait for one of the main characters to get told off! I read the book a while ago, so I had forgotten some of it. Great that the deleted scenes reminded me who Skeeter's boyfriend was.

good submitted by manz on June 14, 2020, 7:41pm A good film! I enjoyed the performances of the talented actresses. I like the spice of humor added to a heavy topic.
