Not Exactly an Ogre-Achiever submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 4:34pm The main feature on this dvd is a framing narrative that finds Shrek and some of his familiar friends riffing on classic horror films as part of a bet to determine who is the bravest among them. The three short stories are of mixed quality, and it’s difficult to tell who the main audience for them is; though the Shrek series has always blended kid-friendly and adult-oriented humor, usually with great success, I’m not really sure why the filmmakers decided to use “Bride of Frankenstein”, “Psycho”, and (even more inexplicably!) “Poltergeist” as their main reference points here. They’re classics, yes, but younger audiences surely won’t be familiar with them, even from references in other kid-oriented media. The result is a bit of a muddle that ultimately doesn’t really work for either audience, a mish-mash of references that simply don’t make sense on their own or fit together. The filmmakers had the right idea, with both “Bride of Gingy” and “Boots Motel” offering Shrek-ified takes on the source material both seriously and with the typical irreverence, respectively. In the end, though, the whole thing doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and it feels more like a marketing ploy rather than a serious attempt to do something different.
