COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Good, featherweight fun. PLUS SCOOTERS! submitted by CasualTim on February 15, 2012, 4:02pm I had heard some excessively mediocre reviews of this film, which, being the scooter-rider that I am, had me wary to watch it and be disappointed. But that worry was all silliness. Larry Crowne is a sweet, slightly modern romcom that does exactly what it’s trying to do. It was better than I expected, despite having fewer scooter scenes than I expected. That’s high praise from a reviewer like me.

Most of the poor reviews focus on how Crowne doesn’t treat the economic crisis with enough gravity, or how its levity isn’t realistic. Talk about missing the point. While events in the movie transpire because of a modern economic climate, those are setting and set-up, not focus nor subject. In fact, this movie could have really crashed and burned if Hanks had been unable to successfully navigate such a serious matter, sailing safely in to the harbor of light-heartedness.

But he does. He gets hit hard, but the reason the movie succeeds is the reason Crowne has a chance to succeed (in more than one way): his is a character who gets up off the mat. He knows he’s got weak spots, he knows he’s likely to get hit again, but he gets up. And, with the help of a spirited Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Talia, he finds that he can still dance, still dodge, and yes, still lean into the curves (apologies for the broken metaphor).

Seriously, this movie is just a lot of fun. It’s not a masterpiece, it’s not a biting social commentary, it’s entirely predictable, but it is fun. I’d watch this 100 times before I’d watch Fool’s Gold or Leap Year once.

Second chances submitted by kathleen824 on July 6, 2012, 9:54am Every one deserves a second chance at life. Larry Crowne is given a gift from UMart that seems more like a a reason to falter than to fly. However, he dusts himself off and and puts on his big boy pants and begins his transformation from just living to truely being alive.
