Wide Open Spaces submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:24am Like the U.S. plains, the tracks on this album feel expansive, with plenty of space around their musical ideas as they emerge, transform, and occasionally return. Something about the construction of these piano solos effectively evokes the seemingly endless flat fields that characterize the western Midwest, while retaining Winston’s trademark playfulness and ability to construct songs in a way that appeals to listeners without a strong background in instrumental music. The melodies are strong and emerge from sweeping backgrounds, occasionally recalling the music of Spaghetti Westerns and, in the case of “Cloudburst”, the iterative work of Steve Reich. Each of these tracks reveals something new, yet they all come back to a central feeling of openness; to my mind, this is a fantastic showcase of music’s ability to tell stories without words.
