COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories submitted by leighsprauer on October 3, 2023, 8:20am Hemingway is growing on me. I think this is partly because I can only handle him in small doses, so short stories are ideal, but also because I've just read several "new" (i.e. post-2000) fiction books in the past couple of months, so I'm acutely aware of how easy it is to write terrible fiction. Nothing makes you appreciate good writing like reading some best-sellers.
I still think the dialogue in Hemingway is strange and stilted, and the prose can be a struggle to get through, but, man, there's a reason that we still read him. Some authors simply show us characters, better ones might highlight the universal human struggles in and through a particular character, but Hemingway is like a laser. Everything unnecessary has been burnt away, and we're left with the distilled essence of humanity.
Of these, my favorites were Snows of Kilimanjaro, A Clean, Well-lighted Place, A Day's Wait, Fifty Grand, and Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. But they're all good.
