The Hartes and the Golds have been neighbors for 18 years and are very close. So when Chris and Emily's friendship reaches the next level, nobody is surprised. Then one night, the hospital calls. Seventeen-year-old Emily is dead--shot in the head by a gun Chris took from his father's cabinet. One bullet remains in the chamber, and Chris tells of his suicide pact with Emily. But the police have questions, and soon Chris is on trial for murder.

5 of 5 stars! submitted by mickplu on June 18, 2018, 9:06pm ** spoiler alert ** Wow! I had 80 pages to go when I fell asleep last night and I immediately picked up the book to drink with my morning coffee. Picoult details the relationship between two teenagers who grew up living next door to each other, but more importantly, as close as brother and sister. When Emily commits suicide with Chris' father's gun, and with Chris present, the question of whether it was murder or suicide becomes the focal point of a courtroom drama. Although I was somewhat surprised by the verdict, I also expected a typical Picoult twist at the end, which actually didn't happen (in my opinion). Regardless, I think Picoult pained a very realistic portrait of teen suicide and the sad but relevant, reasons kids at that age, don't tell adults these major plans.

Wow. submitted by Pooh3238 on July 25, 2018, 11:44pm Very relavent topic in today's society. Very well written, and very thought-provoking.

The Pact submitted by czadams on August 28, 2022, 9:27am I wasn't going to read this because suicide is such an intense topic, but wow, this was soo well written and insightful and humanizing for all members of the community surrounding this suicide. It made me think a lot about society, what we can do to prevent this and how we might better help individuals who were affected by suicide.
