COMMUNITY REVIEWS

An Unexpected Variety of Influences submitted by Meginator on July 3, 2019, 12:10am This compilation really surprised me with the huge variety of musical influences, expected and completely unexpected, that these artists incorporate into their work. Still, many of these tracks share common features, such as an emphasis on stringed instruments and a general sensibility that is difficult to articulate but ties all of these songs together. Understandably, the album has quite a few Fado tracks, given that it’s probably Portugal’s best-known folk form, ut there’s a lot more here to discover as well. Though these songs pull from different folk traditions from across Europe, each feels connected to the others, and overall this album is one of the more interesting, and unpredictable, Rough Guide compilations I’ve listened to.
