COMMUNITY REVIEWS

not Disney, that's for sure! submitted by camelsamba on July 12, 2011, 10:12am I got this audiobook before a flight. I've been wanting to read this for awhile, ever since I realized that the Disney movie was connected to a piece of literature. I knew the original would be different from the movie, but otherwise wasn't sure what to expect.

Comparing to the movie: Baloo was more serious and intense than the happy-go-lucky beloved bumbling bear. Ka (the snake) played a more important (almost heroic) role. The monkeys (orangutans in the movie? or just one orangutan? after all, they don't even live in India, do they??) are almost evil, not just goofy. The larger wolf pack (but not his family) turns on Mowgli. His initial return to the village is for food, not for a cute girl, and he quickly gets turned out again.

The fact that there are departures are no surprise, but the direction they take seems obvious (Hollywood!) in retrospect. I'm not very good at picking out themes and deeper meanings in literature, but I'm sure they're here. And of course there are the colonial attitudes from the times. That's unavoidable. But I do wonder why this is considered children's literature - it's pretty intense, visceral, savage. I guess it's the kind of book I might have seen on a high school reading list, not something an elementary school teacher would read aloud.

Also, there are stories in here that aren't related to Mowgli's life. I knew vaguely of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, but did not know the details. I'd play that story to my kids on a car ride. And Toomai of the Elephants was magical.

Now I need to get the audiobook of "Part 2" from the AADL!
