ok submitted by Ele Z. on July 29, 2011, 9:30am not too good

Genius! submitted by crazypockets on July 24, 2013, 5:58pm Charlie Chaplin never wanted to do talking movies, so it's especially admirable that when he finally did one, he made sure it was one with a very strong political and social statement. At the time, not a lot of people (especially in America) were paying much attention to Hitler. Or if they were, they weren't sure what to do about him. This film exposes just how ridiculous Hitler was as a person and seeks to bring awareness to his ultimate goals of persecution and extermination of the jews.

The pace is slower than what we're used to now, but it's worth it. submitted by lisa on July 29, 2019, 2:59pm The globe-balloon scene is a work of art in itself.

One poignant and striking element for me was the realization, halfway through, that they made this film when it was still very much up in the air whether Hitler would win. Imagine if he had taken over Britain, and what it would mean for the filmmakers. Or just imagine living in that uncertainty with this much understanding already of what Naziism was. It was only 1940 when the film came out.

Relevant as ever submitted by tcramer318 on April 17, 2023, 1:50pm DVD may contain supplemental information on the production and reception of this film. This was my first Charlie Chaplin film and I can understand why he was so popular back in the silent film times. Paulette Goddard was also fun to watch in her role as Hannah.
