a fascinating journey submitted by sumsaylor on July 29, 2015, 2:22pm The journey of Lewis and Clark is fascinating and this series captures so many of the interesting details of their trip. In today's world where it's so easy to travel from one side of the continent to the other and it's easy to forget the struggles these early explorers faced.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED submitted by m steve on June 27, 2018, 10:34am THIS FACTUAL NARRATIVE IS AKIN TO A NOVEL. TOO AMAZING TO BE TRUE.

Interesting; Lacks Critical Analysis submitted by Meginator on July 11, 2021, 12:21pm In typical Ken Burns style, this documentary about the first official U.S. expedition into the recently acquired Louisiana Purchase incorporates narration, interviews, and footage of archival documents and photographs. I was a little wary about the documentary’s perspective given that it was made in the late 1990s, but the producers made a noticeable (if not particularly great) effort to include the perspectives of the indigenous people who interacted with the Corps of Discovery throughout their travels; nonetheless, the general tone is one of largely uncritical celebration without a meaningful exploration of either preceding history or the lasting consequences. Though the story is engaging and well-told, the writers should have done more to emphasize that much of the land covered by the group was inhabited not only by native peoples but also by white people; without this important context, I found certain elements of the overall narrative a bit confusing. Still, this documentary offers a solid (and not overly dry, all things considered) academic introduction to an important moment in the westward expansion of the United States that goes beyond the quick bits you tend to learn in school.
