kind of obnoxious main character submitted by camelsamba on June 30, 2016, 8:18pm After a streak of listening to middle-grades BOCDs, I decided to start looking for ones in the adult section. I was browsing through mysteries when I recognized this character and decided to give it a try. Fun story, even if Agatha starts off completely obnoxious and rather unlikeable. The details of the mystery kept me guessing for quite a while. I am likely to listen to more, although I can predict certain ways the overall story arc might proceed.

Developing Character. submitted by kbcmmom on July 23, 2020, 12:41pm I enjoyed the way the character evolves throughout the story. I don't know much about the locale but I enjoy the of portrayal of village life and how Agatha learns to adjust.

Off-Putting submitted by Gillerdeer on July 12, 2023, 9:06am I recently got into listening to cozy mysteries, and saw online that the Agatha Raisin series is a classic of the genre. While the mystery itself was interesting (not exceptionally so), I found the writing and the character of Agatha Raisin off-putting. Agatha Raisin is not likeable, but (in my opinion) not in a "love to hate her" kind of way. I was also shocked at some points by some homophobic and racist passages - specifically some of the ways that Roy Silver and Detective Constable Wong are described. These could arguably be said to be part of Agatha's character-building, but sometimes it's unclear whether the voice describing these characters is the author's or Agatha's (and certainly it wouldn't have been necessary to add homophobic and racist to the already long list of characteristics that clearly make Agatha Raisin unlikeable). It's an older book, I get it, but if you're bothered by these things, it makes the book harder to get through.
