It had potential, but... submitted by allie0 on July 8, 2014, 11:39am If you've been on the ride at Disney that inspired the movie it was a disappointment.

Not (Quite) As Bad As Expected! submitted by Meginator on August 17, 2020, 7:36pm *Contains an implied plot spoiler that won’t surprise anyone who has seen a Disney film*

I’m going to be honest: I expected something much worse than this, and though this ride-to-film adaptation fails both as a new version of a beloved (and brilliant) classic and as a film in its own right, it’s not all bad. As a fan of the Disney theme parks, I enjoyed many of the references to the 999 Happy Haunts who reside in Anaheim and Lake Buena Vista, of which the singing busts are unquestionably a highlight, with the hitchhiking ghosts in a close second. Surprisingly, the film has the seeds of a great horror movie within it and even some nightmare fuel skeleton effects(!), though it sacrifices suspense for eye-rolling jokes and an uneven tone that fails to find its audience and squanders the story’s significant (and significantly spooky) potential. Wallace Shawn acquits himself well despite a lack of great material to work with, and the other actors are generally tolerable, handling an occasionally nonsensical script with as much grace and subtlety as can be expected- Eddie Murphy resists the temptation to ham it up, and his performance is surprisingly solid. Ultimately, a predictable plot full of holes and short on explanations dooms the enterprise, even allowing the villain to, um, succeed, even if he does get his comeuppance at the hand of unexplained forces that quite literally pop up to do him in. This isn’t a good film, and it’s not a so-bad-it’s-good film, it’s just kind of there in limbo, like its ghostly denizens who surely deserved better.

Fun movie submitted by Abbie D. on July 9, 2022, 2:32pm Not the best, but a fun, family friendly Halloween movie!
