The Robe submitted by leighsprauer on March 10, 2023, 11:40am "Is...is this Bible fan fiction?" my 17-year-old asked a few minutes in. Yes, yes it is. Richard Burton plays Marcellus Gallio, a dissolute Roman tribune who, after insulting Caligula, is sent to a new post in Roman occupied Judea. One of his first (only?) tasks is to crucify the Jewish political prisoner, Jesus. Afterwards, he and the other soldiers gamble for Jesus' possessions, and Gallio wins Jesus' robe. His slave, Demetrius, who had become a convert after looking into Jesus' eyes on Palm Sunday, tries to keep the robe for himself; during their argument, Gallio is overcome by guilt. This guilt eventually drives him mad, and the emperor convinces him to find and destroy the robe, which he assumes must be cursed or enchanted. Gallio returns to Galilee to find and destroy the robe, but after meeting new Christians there, ends up being converted himself.
This is an interesting idea, and was probably groundbreaking for its time. Unfortunately the acting and set scream 1950s cheese, and I wasn't able to look past that. There's nothing really in the story that inspires or even explains why this new religion was so attractive. I guess it was a decent movie, with some good parts, but not one that I'd watch again or recommend.
