COMMUNITY REVIEWS

History as Told By (Some of) Those Who Were There submitted by Meginator on August 25, 2019, 10:08pm Content Warning: This film includes some use of anti-gay slurs (primarily used by gay individuals as a way to describe their experiences) and some scenes of police violence.
Comprised primarily of interviews and archival photographs and film footage, this documentary tells the story of the Stonewall Uprising as experienced by some of the people who were there. The interviewees, who form the production’s backbone, are candid and emphasize the ways in which history is a lived experience. The narrative focuses primarily on historical context and background information, which provides a good framework for understanding the origin and importance of the events on Christopher Street that night. Unfortunately, with few surviving visual sources from the night itself, the visuals are a bit lacking as the filmmakers recycle photographs throughout the film and do not make it clear which images are of the Stonewall Uprising itself as opposed to similar events during the period (a disclaimer does indicate that the film uses both, but the overall effect is confusing nonetheless). Moreover, the film focuses almost exclusively on white men, which does not present a comprehensive view of the situation and erases the importance of people of color and transgender individuals. Despite its flaws, the film does do a good job of telling the basic story of Stonewall and it’s a good starting point if not a definitive exploration of the uprising.
