Differences from Shakespear's Version submitted by brielle on August 22, 2011, 9:25am While the movie was cute and enjoyable, the differences from the actual story got a bit annoying. I was expecting it to be a lot more faithful. Instead of the love-at-first-sight, let's-get-married-because-we're-stupid-teenagers story that didn't make sense, Gnomeo and Juliet actually got to know each other. It was nice to see, but wasn't like the original story at all. That was only the beginning of the differences...

Good Intentions submitted by Meginator on July 16, 2018, 10:48pm This is a very loose adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, and it's obvious by about 20 minutes in that the filmmakers aren't intending to be particularly faithful to the play- and this is probably for the best. The events are somewhat predictable, with a few nifty twists, but the characters are more cardboard than plaster, suited only to the roles they play and not developed one bit beyond that. The main characters are immediately and completely upstaged by a lawn flamingo, which tells you all you need to know about character development. And all of this despite a cast that looks impeccable on paper!

Moreover, the film tries a bit too hard to cram in adult-friendly jokes that don't flow at all naturally from the dialogue. This can be, and has been, done successfully, so it's disappointing that the results here are so middling. The film's core concept is a good one, but the filmmakers don't quite do it justice, nor do they really exploit the gnomes' parallel world beyond a few quick jokes. Ultimately, the film is more or less forgettable, though I will give the sequel a chance.
