return to Ubangiba
submitted by camelsamba on July 31, 2016, 9:48pm
In this addition to the Mrs Pollifax canon, she accompanies Kadi Hopkirk to the made-up African nation of Ubangiba. Kadi has been asked to come by Sammat, her childhood friend, who is concerned that someone is working to undermine his coronation and the country's stability. (Both Kadi and Sammat appeared in an earlier Mrs P story, _Mrs Pollifax Pursued_.)
The lion killer of the title is not someone who kills lions (after all, there are no lions in Ubangiba), but someone who kills while wearing a lion mask and by using a razor-sharp claw-like weapon. While the Mrs P series is primarily in the spy / intrigue genre, this one is more of a mystery in the classical sense. The lion killer has been striking down citizens in Ubangiba and Sammat has come under suspicion of sorcery; can Kadi and Mrs P figure out what is going on? Not before Kadi - and then Emily - face down threats of their own.
(There's also a side plot involving ancient artifacts which seems to exist primarily to pull our characters out of the capital, and a burgeoning romance for Kadi, but it's not clear if the latter will progress beyond this book.)
This does not have as strong a sense of place as some of the Pollifax books, probably because Gilman made up the country and had not visited sub-Saharan Africa. (This tidbit revealed in the author interview at the end of Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled.)
