Mrs P goes to Jordan
submitted by camelsamba on July 6, 2018, 8:56pm
This addition to the Mrs Pollifax series is set primarily in Jordan, some years after the first Gulf War. I was a bit worried at first that it was going to be a tiresome flag-waving book (from the overleaf, discussing a central plot element: "Allegedly fiction, the script encodes the shocking truth of Saddam Hussein's reign"). But it wasn't. Certain elements are predictable, and certain aspects are nearly unbelievable, but there were enough plot twists to keep things interesting and Mrs P is such an entertaining character that I enjoyed the book. I really enjoy the narrator of this series; in fact, I can hear her voice in my head when I read any of the books in print. However, although she has been so consistent with voices of our main characters over the years, she has a hard time maintaining accents for the Jordanians within the book.
A while back I heard about a study where someone analyzed Agatha Christie's work and could see (linguistically) how it changed as she began to suffer from Alzheimer's. If i recall correctly, it was subtle enough that readers might not notice but analysis could find it. Knowing that Dorothy Gilman also suffered from Alzheimer's, I've wondered if it shows up in her writing. This audiobook includes an interview with her and she does lose track of the conversation at times.
