Into an ordinary vacuum cleaner salesman's life slithers the Secret Service with a not-so-ordinary proposition, and Wormold, high on incredulity but low on cash, accepts the offer: a $300 a month assignment as England's new "man" in Havana. To keep the job and, more importantly, the cash flowing, Wormold fabricates non-existent agents, fake expense accounts, false stories, even a phony weapons conspiracy. But the stakes change when people start turning up murdered.
