COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Humor, Pathos, Drama and Dancing submitted by michrigan on March 16, 2007, 8:40am Like most if not all Indian movies this has a lot of singing and dancing and someone always gets married in the end. Yet this 1950s black-and-white gem stands apart from the rest of Bollywood hype. There is drama, romance, comedy, and dancing all rolled into one. It involves a conflicted romance between a rich girl and a poor, but savvy man. She is engaged to another suitor who only wants her father's money. The kind of scenes are straight out of American classics like It Happened One Night, but the dialogue and situations have more bite and realism. And as a result the humor is devastatingly effective. The sadness of the heroine near the end is heartwrenching as she watches the incredibly strong yet feminine and artistic women dancers praise her impending wedding. No dancing scene, whether it be Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, or Busby Berkeley can match the excitement produced by the Indian women dancers with the highlight being a most realistic scene in the first half of the action with dancer, musicians and singer with capabilities unknown in the Western world..
