Good, but not my fav submitted by marshd on June 25, 2011, 4:41pm While this is not one of my favorite albums by The Decemberists, it does swing back to Colin Meloy's roots in the band Tarkio. The sound is a bit more country than the other albums, but there are still some songs that rock. My personal favorite is the slow tune "Dear Avery."

The Decemberists Tackle Americana submitted by timdufresne on July 10, 2018, 4:05pm The Decemberists detour just a little bit from their alternative/folk roots to dive into a different kind of Americana. This delightful album is full of hints of darkness and death, like so many of their albums, leavened with bright engaging melodies and great song crafting.
Indie Pop Rock + Folk + Country = It Works submitted by Meginator on June 19, 2019, 7:25pm This album is unmistakably indie pop rock, but it incorporates a lot of influences from folk and country in its instrumentation. This leads to an album full of well-crafted songs that display the band’s many talents, though the unique timbre of Colin Meloy’s voice will be a dealbreaker for some listeners (I don’t think it works particularly well on the ballads, but it’s buoyant on the upbeat tracks and makes them very memorable). I find this different direction appealing, as the band shows that they have a number of tricks up their sleeve and don’t always have to get mired in their ambitions. I was pleasantly surprised here, with a much better and more stimulating experience than I had anticipated.
