COMMUNITY REVIEWS

History in Song submitted by Meginator on July 12, 2023, 10:30am This extensive compilation of songs written during and about the Civil War is an important resource for understanding the war’s cultural impact throughout the country. Most of the songs espouse a Union perspective, which makes sense given the respective size of the Union and Confederate populations and the fact that the Union won the war, but others are pro-Confederacy or more neutral in their depictions of the trials and tribulations of a nation at war with itself. These particular recordings are (naturally) contemporary to the time of the album’s original release in 1960, but they largely mimic the original simple instrumentation and often consist of vocals only or vocals with a single instrumental accompaniment. This is perhaps more interesting from an academic point of view than a strictly musical one (for most listeners, at least), but the way that people commemorate events in music is central to understanding the way that those events felt at the time, and from that perspective this is an important collection of songs that reveal quite a bit about one of the most contentious and influential periods in U.S. history.
