Inventive Electrified Pop submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2019, 11:06pm Despite consisting largely of accessible, upbeat pop, this album has a bit of a funky experimental vibe to it that gives the band a unique sound and provides the listener with more to chew on than more mainstream offerings. The band pays careful attention to Julie Budet’s vocals and uses her voice much like an instrument, a feature that becomes even more prominent when the listener doesn’t know much French. Much of the music’s playful quality comes from the use of synthesizers that evoke the 1980s (and occasionally, 8-bit videogame music), again taking a familiar musical experience and twisting it slightly; these callbacks are obvious, but they are sprinkled in among pulsing drum tracks in such a way as to sound consistently modern. This album looks backward to look forward and is unabashedly fun; I’ll certainly look forward to revisiting it.
