COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Book is good, audiobook is better submitted by Enzy on October 28, 2011, 4:02pm While the book is also hilarious (see Jaegerla's review), the audiobook is definitely worth listening to. David Sedaris has a wonderful sense of timing when reading and certain chapters are live recordings of him with an audience which certainly adds to its charm. The only thing that surpasses his reading style is the content. He talks about his father's obsession with hiding food, consuming it well past its "best by" date, and his own struggles with wanting to be an artist and the drugs that surround that desire. My personal favorites are his stories regarding how he learned French. There is just something about a grown man saying "Is them the thoughts of cows?" when referring to cow brains that makes me chuckle.

About once a year I check out this audiobook in order to listen and laugh. Generally I choose to do so in Autumn because I can feel the impending doom of winter around the corner and I need a good laugh. Huddling in my warm apartment with a cup of tea and Sedaris' voice emanating from my old stereo, I cannot help but enjoy the colder weather and be grateful for a reason to stay inside.

Amazing funny read submitted by manz on August 18, 2012, 10:15am I LOVE the works of David Sedaris. This was one of the first I read and it had be laughing out loud like a crazy person. I'll read anything this man writes. This one is definitely one of the best of his. Read/Listen and then LAUGH your booty off.

Funny yet sad submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 28, 2012, 11:40am As someone who also endured speech therapy as a child I can sympathize with the sadness author David Sedaris indirectly describes about being a child with a lisp in 1960s North Carolina.

Now an openly gay writer and "This American Life" contributor, Sedaris brings us lots of funny stories about his life that nonetheless have a subtle social commentary.

Sedaris At His Best submitted by crazypockets on June 18, 2013, 6:44pm I agree with Enzy that David Sedaris is best when listened to. You really get a sense of his stories as heard through his own voice. I love listening to him on my commute to work not only because he always makes me laugh, but because his stories so often end in a profound or genuinely kind way that sometimes can surprise you. He's quirky and kind of snarky sometimes, but you really get the sense that he's actually a really good guy. This is one of his favorite story collections because it focuses on his time in France, and I found his observations really interesting.
