Prepare for your trip to Hannibal, MO! submitted by camelsamba on July 12, 2011, 10:03am When I was young, my mother's only brother lived not too far from Hannibal (Samuel Clemens childhood home). Whenever we visited them in Missouri, we would make a trip to Hannibal. So when my husband and I were planning a June 2009 road trip and I saw we could easily route through Hannibal, I decided it was time to introduce my children to this classic of American literature. We listened to a CD version on our drive there. I thought I was going to lose them during the first few chapters - there's a lot of 19th century language that I'd completely forgotten about and not a lot of action - but we eventually got to the action. I found that I'd forgotten much of what was in the book - I could certainly remember Tom's way of getting the fence white washed, and them getting lost in the cave (oops, does that qualify as a spoiler? :^), and the trial was familiar as it unfolded, but many other details - even details of the adventure, not just details of the 'slower' parts - had slipped my mind. I guess I mostly remembered the parts that are emphasized by the tourist attractions in Hannibal!

I am happy to report that my boys enjoyed Tom's Adventures (although the 6yo will probably need a repeat visit in a few years, he was the most put out about having to listen).

fun for a road trip submitted by SaraP on July 25, 2019, 3:38pm Not Twain's best book, but great for a long drive.

Mark Twains best book! submitted by bedineelu on June 27, 2023, 8:35am The adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book for all ages, I read to me and my family a few years ago, and I just reread it yesterday. This book is great for someone who needs a laugh, after all, who couldn’t laugh at the tricks that sawyer pulls on people to play hooky? I hope someone will pick up The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and really like it!
