COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Light in the Darkness submitted by Caser on May 17, 2011, 1:20pm On the documentary that comes with the box set version of The Promise (not included in the Library's 2xCD version), members of the E Street Band talk about the large number of songs that were recorded during the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions but left off the final 10 track album. Many of those songs are included here on these CDs, while others eventually went on the 1980 release, The River.

In the film doc, Springsteen notes that Van Zandt was especially fond of the three minute pop tunes that didn't make the cut, and other members lament that the song, "The Promise", which they worked on for several months, didn't make it. Bruce decided he couldn't keep it because he couldn't objectively evaluate it after all the labor they put into it. Certainly, that tune is one of the highlights of this release.

The album functions well as an intermediary between Darkness and The River. While the former is thematically and sonically shrouded in pitch and broken hope, and the latter is bursting with rollicking tunes, The Promise has love songs, pop songs, and alt takes of songs that appear on the albums that bookend it. The Promise sounds like late 70s Springsteen, which is a plus, but there is good reason for their exclusion, for they just don't fit on either Darkness or River and neither the lyrics nor the music are quite up to the standard of the aforementioned albums.

broken promises submitted by kencza on August 1, 2018, 8:36pm These did not make the cut and except for a few tunes I can see why. So, what do you do with them?
Wait a while and release them for the people who have to own everything put out by an artist. Not a disaster
but not to make you sing or dance for the most part.
