Cute submitted by edwardsrl on October 21, 2011, 6:26am Cute little movie, read the Ramona books when I was younger. The movie is sorta different probably because they're probably trying to mash all the books togetther and make one big movie. But it is still a cute little family movie.

Good kids' movie for these tough times! submitted by crazypockets on November 10, 2011, 1:10pm I was a huge fan of the Ramona books growing up (and still am!), and I liked the old-school TV episodes that were made way back when, too. So I thought it'd be fun to check this one out. They made a few odd changes, but overall, the filmmakers did a good job of keeping the original story in tact.
As far as casting goes, Joey King is adorable as the full-of-personality Ramona. Fans of the "Chris in the Morning" John Corbett might have a bit of an adjustment curve (like I did) to the actor playing the role of the graying, tired-but-cheerful father, but his depiction of Mr. Quimby is charming enough to get you past it pretty quickly. The only casting qualm I have is with Selena Gomez as Beezus. I know they wanted to have a big kid actor name to bring in the tween crowd, but come on! Beezus is supposed to be awkward (and not in the "pretty girl who is clumsy" kind of way as played by Gomez) and dealing with her own growing up issues like agonizing over her skin problems. Gomez is perky and beautiful, and only minimally moody. And she is far too nice to Ramona in this movie: anyone who grew up with a sister knows the books were much more accurate of a depiction of that relationship.
But I really liked how they made a solid effort to bring the story into more contemporary terms. In these times, many children will be able to identify with Ramona's concerns over her father being laid off, job search, and the family's possible move out of the house in which she grew up. This'll inevitably be a bit of a tearjerker for parents, but it could also be a dialog-opener as well. I also liked how true the filmmakers were to Ramona's strong imagination and the little sequences showing this.
Despite some changes to the plot, character development, and story timelines of the books, fans of the original (wonderful!) books will be happy to find most of their favorite funny moments shown here. There are even a few secret little nods that die-hard fans may enjoy watching for-does anyone else think Mr. Quimby's art style looks a little familiar?

Great movie! submitted by Morgsush on June 19, 2012, 5:07pm This is a wonderful movie for the whole family. The kids will love Ramona, and your teens will love Beezus. And anyone who's grown up with Beverly Cleary will also love this great film.

great movie submitted by chloehyatt on August 19, 2015, 11:35am good

Meh submitted by peterflorence on June 20, 2016, 4:56pm I think they should have had individual movies for each book. It melded them all together, forcing the movie to leave out some of the great parts from the book.

Brought to Life submitted by smileforjd on July 19, 2019, 8:15pm This movie will bring the characters from the books to life!
