From the spires of a steampunk-inflected Oxford to a fortress populated by armored, talking polar bears, Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass certainly doesn't lack an imaginative setting. But the real heart of the story is Lyra Belacqua, an orphan and ward of Oxford University who like everyone else in her world has a daemon, a living manifestation of her own soul. After the simultaneous arrival of her uncle Asriel and a mysterious woman named Mrs. Coulter, Lyra finds herself in the middle of a world of intrigue that involves kidnappings, something called intercision, and a plan to undo the very foundations of her world. She's carried all the way to the Arctic Circle by boat, balloon, and bear, where she discovers that she's had it all wrong--and that she might not be a mere pawn, but the key to saving not just her parallel universe but our own as well. Called "a totally involving, intricately plotted fantasy that will leave readers clamoring for the sequels" by Booklist, The Golden Compass dares to challenge readers' deepest convictions, expand their imaginations, and leave them at turns exhilarated, heartbroken, and ultimately spellbound by this unforgettable book.

Great Book for All Kids! submitted by crazypockets on July 4, 2014, 5:24pm Another really fun audiobook-listened to on Playaway MP3 player which was fantastic. Got me through a lot of walks home from work. The voice actors were so so good on this! I loved their accents and not a single voice was annoying. I especially liked the voices of Lyra, Asriel, and the armored bear. The fact that the author narrated it made it all the more great. As for the story, it was exactly the kind of story I loved to read as a child, so it was a lot of fun. It's always great to read an independent, intelligent, NORMAL female child character without it being beaten into the ground that "Hey, she's doing all this stuff AND she's a girl! Isn't that amazing?!" Lyra just did her thing, and that's all there is to it. Can't wait to listen to the rest of the series!

Amazing submitted by zmclaugh on July 27, 2018, 7:54pm This is already a great story in an imaginative world, but even better this audiobook is full cast. Listen to it!

The Golden Compass submitted by lstorc on July 3, 2019, 6:42pm This is a compelling tale with a strong role model for kids. The narrator adds an extra, exciting element.

Love the book, but prefer the print version submitted by nemiller on July 17, 2020, 2:18pm I loved this book when I was a teen, and I still love it now.

Usually I love audiobooks, but I felt like the voice actor for Lyra made her seem timid, rather than the bold and brash girl Pullman describes.

ok submitted by VanCancue on August 10, 2020, 3:35pm I had to read this audiobook at higher speed. certainly not my cup of tea but excellently adapted by the HBO TV series.

I was under the impression this more of a fantasy fiction however the spiritual and political aspects were too religiously inclined for a fantastical view.
Despite being an avid fantasy fiction reader the way Lyra extrapolated lengthy detailed stories from the alethiometer made no sense despite cosmic like connection to dust.....

The character Lyra though attempting to be righteous (except when fibbing away to glory and call it story telling) and considerate was erratic and irksome. I believe the audiobook voice actors for lyra portrayed the character this way. The HBO series did a more likable job. v Both mother and daughter were portrayed similarly with wavering loyalties. Really did not like the portrayal of the lead females in this book.

Despite all this the story is great but tedious.
